Therapy Q&A
What is therapy?
Therapy, sometimes called talk therapy or counseling, treats a wide range of mental and emotional health issues. It can help you control or eliminate troubling distorted thinking and other negative symptoms, improving your well-being and ability to function in your day to day life.
The various types of therapy use differing approaches, techniques, and practices to help you explore and resolve your mental health. Some of the common types of counseling include:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Interpersonal therapy
- Psychoanalysis
- Supportive therapy
The team at Plymouth Psych Group offers therapy for individuals, couples, and families. They take a collaborative approach, working with you and their colleagues to ensure you receive the best possible care.
Why would I need therapy?
The team at Plymouth Psych Group includes therapy in treatment plans for a wide range of mental health conditions, including:
- Schizophrenia
- Depressive disorders
- Mood disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Cognitive disorders
- Personality disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Adjustment disorders
- Gender identity disorders
- Child and adolescent disorders
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Trauma and grief issues
- Anger management issues
In addition to mental health conditions, almost everyone goes through a challenging time of life and can benefit from therapy. For example, if you are going through a divorce, relocation, or a change of schools, meeting with a therapist can help you cope with change and offer techniques to help you get through a challenging time.
What should I expect during therapy?
Many people think that therapy involves lying on a couch and talking about their dreams, feelings, or mothers, but this isn’t what happens. When you meet with your therapist, you might sit on a comfortable couch or chair and explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, but you also agree and work toward your goals.
Usually, during your first meeting, you and your therapist complete an evaluation that helps them understand your condition and your needs. By the end of the session, you agree on what actions to take. It could be controlling your anger, reducing anxiety, or changing the way you think.
In subsequent meetings, you and your therapist work together to help you achieve your goals. Your therapist might assign “homework,” such as reading, journaling, or practicing techniques that you learn during your session.
Most patients don’t need to be in therapy forever. Once you reach your goals, you can reduce the frequency of your appointments and eventually end them. After you finish therapy, you can return to treatment if your symptoms return or something else changes.
