Definition of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics
Developmental-behavioral pediatric specialists focus on assessment and treatment for children, adolescents, and their families with a wide range of developmental and behavioral concerns.
Our training has equipped us to understand the range of typical child development, as well as understanding when children behave and develop differently than you might expect. We hope to better understand the impact of your child’s strengths and challenges and work to develop a care plan together.
Developmental Assessments
The goal of a developmental assessment is to evaluate, diagnose, monitor, and treat developmental and behavioral concerns. Establishing a neurodevelopmental diagnosis may require several visits and various assessment measures. This process will start during our initial visit and continue throughout care. We will gather information about your child’s developmental history, medical history, family history, educational history and current concerns. This will help to focus the assessment and determine how we can best meet the needs of your child. The role of other professionals and additional referral information will be considered as part of the comprehensive plan.

The services of a developmental specialist and neuropsychologist can complement one another. As developmental specialists, we will oversee and monitor the medical status of children with developmental differences throughout childhood. We will conduct a physical exam, can prescribe medication, and can perform screenings related to neurodevelopmental disorders. Unlike neuropsychologists, we do not provide cognitive testing, but can use this knowledge (if available) to help guide recommendations specific to your child. We can also make recommendations about when to see a neuropsychologist to gain additional information specific to your child.
All clinic visits are documented within the electronic medical record. These notes are similar to a medical clinic visit and as such will differ from a standard neuropsychological evaluation.
